Why The 8” Bracelet I Bought Doesn’t Fit My 8” Wrist?

Did you ever buy a bracelet exactly the size of your wrist but couldn’t wear? Well, that’s because the length of the bracelet when laid out flat does not equal the inner circumference when latched shut. It is the inside circumference that fits around your wrist, but it is usually much smaller than the actual length of the bracelet. When choosing bracelet size, you need to add an extra measurement to your wrist size.

How Much Should I Add?

Many articles simply suggest adding 1.5 cm or 1/2 inch. But that doesn’t always work out. Because how much you need to add mainly depends on the thickness of the bracelet. The thicker the bracelet is the more you should add.

Generally speaking, if you prefer a snug fit or exact fit, increase your wrist measurement by the increment below.

Thickness of Bracelet       Extra Measurement to Add

3 mm                                   1.3 cm / 0.5 inch

4 mm                                   1.5 cm / 0.6 inch

5 mm                                   2 cm / 0.8 inch

6 mm                                   2.5 cm / 1 inch

7 mm                                   3 cm / 1.2 inches

8 mm                                   3.5 cm / 1.4 inches

9 mm                                   4 cm / 1.6 inches

10 mm                                 4.5 cm / 1.8 inches

12 mm                                 5 cm / 2 inches

If you want the bracelet to fit a little loosely, add 0.5 cm to 1 cm (0.2 to 0.4 inch) more.

The clasp type of a bracelet should also be considered when determine a proper length. Common clasps like lobster clasp and open box clasp don’t require extra length. But clasps like S-hook and toggle clasp require an extra length of 0.5 cm (0.2 inch) for you to wear it on.

With these simple instructions, I’m sure you can choose bracelets that fit you well.
